Maryland Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Audiologist

State Licensure

  1. Master's degree or equivalent from an institution approved by the board and completion of a period of supervised postgraduate training or hold a doctoral degree from an educational institution that incorporates academic coursework and the minimum hours of supervised training
  2. Passage of an examination

Continuing Education Requirement

20 hours per two year renewal cycle

Speech-Language Pathologist

Option 1: The applicant shall have a master's degree in the appropriate area from an institution with a program which was approved in the year of graduation by the State Department of Education or ASHA.

Option 2: The applicant shall have a bachelor's degree or higher and study at the graduate level with 60 semester hours, including 18 semester hours in courses that provide fundamental information applicable to the normal development and use of speech and hearing, 42 semester hours, of which 30 shall be in graduate level courses, acceptable toward a graduate degree, in courses providing information about and training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of speech, hearing and language disorders. The applicant shall also complete 275 hours of supervised clinical experience in the evaluation and rehabilitation of children and adults presenting a variety of disorders of communication, preferably including some experience in a public school setting.

Option 3: Individual must have state licensure or CCC.

Continuing Education Requirement

For Options 1 and 2, applicants need to complete six semester hours of acceptable credit every five years. Applicants with state licensure need to complete 20 hours every two years and applicants with CCC must complete 30 hours every three years.

Emergency Certification

A Conditional Certificate valid for two years may be issued only at the request of the local school system superintendent to an applicant employed in the local school system who doesn't meet all certification requirements.
