Louisiana Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

Audiologist

State Licensure

  1. Good moral character
  2. Master's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution (75 semester hours)
  3. 375 hours supervised postgraduate full-time professional employment or its part-time equivalent
  4. Passage of an examination

Continuing Education Requirement

10 clock hours per year

Speech-Language Pathologist

State Licensure

  1. Good moral character
  2. Master's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution (75 semester hours)
  3. 375 hour supervised postgraduate full-time professional employment or its part-time equivalent
  4. Passage of an examination

Continuing Education Requirement

10 clock hours are required per year for licensed speech-language pathologists. Speech-language pathology assistants must also complete 10 clock hours per year.

Emergency Certification

None

Support Personnel

Speech-language pathology assistants must also be state licensed. Each assistant must have:

  1. B.A. in communication disorders
  2. Good moral character
  3. 225 hour supervised clinical practicum
  4. Completed on-the-job training

The Board will grant a provisional SLPA license to those applicants with at least 100 hours, the remaining 125 hours may be obtained on the job.
