Consideration of FY2009 Labor-HHS-Education Funding Bill Stalls in House

(06/27/2008)

On June 27th, both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees convened to consider their fiscal year (FY) 2009 Departments of Labor-HHS-Education funding bills. While both committee meetings started well, the House hearing dissolved quickly under political wrangling and adjourned without voting on the bill, effectively ending the consideration of a 2009 funding bill until after this fall's elections. In the Senate Appropriations Committee, senatorial comity reigned and their FY09 Labor-HHS-Education bill was passed 26-3.

Due to historical practice and some major procedural hurdles, the full U.S. Senate is unlikely to consider the FY09 Labor-HHS-Ed bill unless the House finishes consideration of their bill, and sends it over to the Senate. Otherwise, it is likely that FY2008 funding levels will be extended until after the November elections.
