ASHA Meets OSERS Assistant Secretary

(07/21/2008)

Staff from ASHA's from Government Relations and Public Policy division along with colleagues from ASHA's Speech-Language Pathology Practices group recently met with Tracy Justesen, Assistant Secretary, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), William Knudsen, Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Director of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), and other OSERS staff to discuss IDEA.

A number of IDEA Part B Implementation issues were discussed including qualified providers, caseload/workload, Response-to-Intervention (RTI), and how ASHA and the U.S. Department of Education (ED) could collaborate on issues of mutual concern. ED continues to work on its non-regulatory guidance on RTI which is nearing completion. Work also continues on finalizing the IDEA Part C regulations. ASHA will continue to work with ED on these and other issues to aid members in the implementation of IDEA 2004. For further information, please contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 5611.
