The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently released its back to school statistics, quick facts about American schools and the educational process. Some interesting facts include:
- 93% - Percentage of children with disabilities, 3-5 years of age, who received speech-language therapy during the 2003-04 school year.
- 20% - Percentage of school-age children who spoke a language other than English at home in 2005.
- 27% - Percentage of African-American preschool-age children identified as having a speech or language impairment as their primary disability; whereas 42 percent of Hispanic children and 51 percent of White children were identified as having a speech or language impairment as their primary disability.
- 17% - Percentage increase in high school completion rates for students with disabilities from 1987 to 2003. Also the percentage increase in the proportion of students with disabilities participating in postsecondary education from 1987 to 2003.
