New Dysphagia Diagnosis Codes Begin in October

(09/18/07)

This is a reminder that beginning on October 1, 2007, there will be new International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes for dysphagia. They are the result of an ASHA recommendation for more specificity in dysphagia classification.

787.20 Dysphagia, unspecified
787.21 Dysphagia, oral phase
787.22 Dysphagia, oropharyngeal phase
787.23 Dysphagia, pharyngeal phase
787.24 Dysphagia, pharyngoesophageal phase
787.29 Other dysphagia

An expected scenario for the use of the new codes is a physician referral of patient with a diagnosis of 787.20 to a speech-language pathologist for a swallowing assessment. The speech-language pathologist can use one of the new dysphagia functional disorder codes following the completion of the swallowing assessment. ASHA has more detailed information about dysphagia and other codes available on our reimbursement site.

Please contact reimbursement@asha.org if you have any questions about the new ICD-9-CM dysphagia codes.
