The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) announced, in the April 6, 2007, Federal Register, its FY2008 competitions for grants to support education, special education research, and research training. The intent of these grants is to provide national leadership in expanding fundamental knowledge and understanding of education from early childhood education through postsecondary and adult education. Applicants that have the ability and capacity to conduct scientifically valid research are eligible, including, but not limited to, non-profit and for-profit organizations and public and private agencies and institutions, such as colleges and universities.
The IES will conduct nine research or research training competitions in FY2008 through two of its National Education Centers. The National Center for Education Research (NCER) will hold five competitions: two for education research; two for education research training; and one for education research and development centers. The National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) will hold four competitions: two for special education research; one for special education research training; and one for special education research and development centers.
The issue of related services is one of the special education research topics under the first NCSER competition on special education research. Speech-language pathology and audiology can fall under this category, but not to the exclusion of other categories. Individuals interested in submitting grant applications should review the application descriptions to determine appropriate competitions. For more details on the topics, you can view the Federal Register notice [PDF]. Deadlines for the competitions vary and can be found in the same notice. Information regarding program and application requirements are available on the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences Web site and the U.S. Department of Education's Office of the Institute of Education Sciences Web site.
