ASHA Urges President Bush for Additional IDEA Funding in FY2008

(02/08/07)

ASHA President Noma B. Anderson sent a letter to President Bush asking him to include significant increases for special education funding in his fiscal year 2008 budget proposal. View President Anderson's letter (PDF format).

President Anderson's letter focused on two key programs authorized under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - Part B State Grants and Part C Early Intervention Grants. The letter asked President Bush to fulfill the federal commitment and increase the federal contribution to 40% by 2011 by including $3.75 billion in new funding for FY2008. This increase would put the government back on track to reach full funding by 2011 as authorized in law.

For the IDEA Part C program, President Anderson urged President Bush to request $570 million in FY2008. This would be a 50% increase over current funding levels and the first increase in three years. IDEA Part C ensures that infants and toddlers (birth to age three) with developmental delays and disabilities and their families receive the early intervention supports and services needed for the child's developmental progress.
