House Passes Higher Education Act Extension Until May 1, 2008

(10/29/07)

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would extend current federal laws regulating higher education programs through April 2008. The Senate is expected to consider and pass the bill before the end of the month when the second extension of the current higher education law is set to expire.

In a floor statement, during consideration of H.R. 3927, Congressman Ruben Hinojosa (D-Texas), Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness, said, "Given the length of time that has elapsed between when the Higher Education Act should have been reauthorized and today, we believed that it was critical that the 110th Congress and the stakeholders in the higher education community take a fresh look at the law and the recommendations to improve it."

Congressman Rick Keller (R-Florida), the Ranking minority member on the Higher Education Subcommittee, also supported passage of H.R. 3927. In Congressman Keller's floor statement he said that, "while I support the extension of the Higher Education Act, I also believe that we need to get on with it at this point and reauthorize this important law…the last time this law was authorized was when President Bill Clinton was in office back in 1998, and it expired in 2004."
