ED Extends Pre-Application Deadline for FY2007 Early Reading First Competition

(03/08/07)

The U.S Department of Education (ED) published a notice in the March 7, 2007 Federal Register reopening the pre-application phase of the Early Reading First FY2007 competition for 16 days for all eligible applicants, including non-local education agencies (LEAs). The new deadline for applicants to submit pre-applications is March 23, 2007, by 4:30 p.m. (EST). Applicants who successfully submitted a pre-application by 4:30 p.m. or between 4:30 p.m. and midnight on the original deadline of February 21, 2007 are not required to submit a new pre-application.

However, all eligible applicants, including those who already successfully submitted a complete pre-application by those deadlines, will have an opportunity to submit a pre-application during the reopened competition. In the case of duplicate pre-applications from a single applicant, ED will review only the most recent pre-application submitted.

Eligibility for Early Reading First grants is based on LEA eligibility for Reading First subgrants. While ED has posted the most current Reading First eligibility lists submitted by state departments of education and the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) to the U.S. Department of Education, it considers it to be each applicant's own responsibility to verify with the Reading First office in its state or with the BIE the eligibility of a particular LEA for a Reading First subgrant as of January 22, 2007. State eligibility lists and a list of State Reading First offices and BIE contacts are available on ED's Web site.

Pre-applications for grants under this competition must be submitted electronically using the Grants.gov application site. For more information on the Early Reading First grants please visit ED's Web site, or contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 4159.
