Rapid increase in the knowledge and skill sets needed to provide quality professional services in a culturally competent manner across various practice settings will lead to specialization areas of clinical practice related to communication sciences and disorders.
3rd Quarter Highlights
- The Schools Conference had a Native American ceremonial blessing at the opening, a session on CLD students and families, an ASHF Native American event, a closing plenary based on Native American beliefs, and had cultural issues infused throughout concurrent sessions.
- Multicultural Infusion Training was provided for new staff to assist them in addressing multicultural issues as they develop professional development programs/products.
- The Multicultural issues Board encouraged the Convention Program Committee to pay special attention to and inclusion of multicultural issues in Convention program presentations.
- The ASHA Office of Multicultural Affairs is working with ASHA Professional Development on development of a video self-study program on "Treatment of English Language Learners."
- The ASHA Professional Practices units recommended new committees to be formed in the areas of clinical supervision and social communication to develop technical report, position statement, knowledge and skills, and guidelines.
- An audiology working group has been established to develop a new guideline on counseling families of newly identified infants and children birth to 5 with hearing loss.
- Continued to promote on the ASHA Web site new and existing knowledge and skill sets in areas such as role of the SLP with autism, work in the NICU, supervision of SLPAs, MR/DD, and cognitive-communication.
