First Quarter Progress Report
January-March 2007

Issue D: Rapid increase in the knowledge and skill sets needed to provide quality professional services in a culturally competent manner across various practice settings will lead to specialization areas of clinical practice related to communication sciences and disorders.

1st Quarter Highlights

  • The 2007 ASHA Schools Conference has a conference theme of "Honoring Cultures." The program will include an opening plenary by Pedro Noguera on disproportionality; closing plenary by Li-Rong Lilly Cheng on connecting through cultures; concurrent sessions including urban culture, deaf culture, Head Start language programs, bilingual students, cultural competence, cross-cultural research on families, and ethics and children from diverse backgrounds.
  • A newly formed ASHA Supervision Committee will develop a Knowledge and Skills document on supervision.
  • Resolutions have been prepared to form new committees on the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in Social Communication Disorders and the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in the Identification and Treatment of Auditory/Linguistic Processing Disorders. Both committees will be charged to include information related to culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
  • Questions about educational specialty tracks have been added to the Guide to Graduate Education in Communication Sciences and Disorders Survey, which is on schedule for a soft launch by April 30, 2007.
  • The Council for Clinical Specialty Recognition (CCSR) is evaluating the Clinical Specialty Recognition program to determine if there are changes that need to be made.
