Second Quarter Progress Report (April-June, 2006)

ISSUE C: A comprehensive scope of practice that includes all of the major components and new areas of practice in communication sciences and disorders enhances the visibility of the professions by consumers and stakeholders and their perceived value of the role of audiologists and speech-language pathologists.

2nd Quarter Highlights

  • Workload information was included in a new resource on early intervening services developed as part of an initiative across the regular education and special education community that was spearheaded by the International Reading Association.
  • Presentations on Responsiveness to Intervention (RTI), including early intervening services, literacy, and prevention were made at the South Dakota and New York Speech-Language-Hearing Association meetings.
  • A RTI Web site is under development on the Schools section of the ASHA Web site.
  • A CD with Let’s Talk and Audiology information related to adults and children has been developed and have been used as give-aways as part of ASHA exhibits at meetings of consumer and professional organizations.
  • A new Let’s Talk on emergent literacy has been developed and posted on the ASHA Web.
  • A Pediatric Audiology Resource book with related documents and consumer newsletters has been developed and disseminated at meetings and as part of ASHA exhibits.
  • Selected resources and documents related to speech-language pathology and audiology and were displayed at the annual convention of the National Education Association.
  • Audiology and speech-language pathology Web based curriculum resources that promote knowledge and skills related to literacy, wellness, prevention and other underserved areas of practice are updated monthly on the ASHA Web site and available to faculty in all academic programs.
  • ASHA exhibited at the annual meeting of the American Telemedicine Association and distributed ASHA policy documents related to audiology and speech-language pathology.
  • Disseminated information from Topics in Language Disorders, January-March 2006, special issue on Literacy Partnerships.
  • Conducted an online program for the National Center for Learning Disabilities on developing literacy partnerships.
  • Health Care Services team worked with members to submit articles to the publication Home Health Nurse and Provider (publication of the American Health Care Association) on telepractice and dysphagia.
  • Subscribed to the following international journals related to audiology to obtain information on professional practice and research in other countries: Medical Audiology; International Journal of Audiology; and Hearing International.
  • Attended the Language Acquisition and Bilingualism Conference in Toronto. Representatives from 33 countries were in attendance.

There are 25 strategies in the work plan for Issue C. Following is the status for the 1st and 2nd quarter.
