A high quality basic, applied, and efficacy research base in communication sciences and disorders, related fields of study, and related functions for the discipline and professions is essential to provide evidence-based clinical practice and quality clinical services.
3rd Quarter Highlights
- A decision was made to put the Association's efforts to securing funding for high-priority research needs in communication sciences and disorders into influencing the work plans of the new NIDCD Translational Research Branch rather than a general GRPP effort with Congress. This has been added to the planning category of the Association's 2007 Public Policy Agenda to be implemented in collaboration between the ASHA Vice Presidents of Governmental & Social Polices and Research & Technology.
- Staff convened meetings of ASHA national office units and volunteer leaders in research to develop a 20-page listing of federal disability and rehabilitation research issues on specific ways to improve future research for individuals with communication disabilities, including the areas of early intervention for speech, language, and hearing disabilities, as well as literacy, and service delivery in schools and various health care settings.
- Evidence-Based Systematic Reviews (EBSRs) have been initiated related to the efficacy of oral-motor exercises on articulation and on the efficacy of oral-motor exercises on dysphagia. The feasibility of initiating a 3rd EBSR with the Professional Practices unit is being investigated.
- Development of a randomized controlled trial registry for trials related to communication sciences and disorders is underway.
