Third Quarter Progress Report
July-September 2007

Issue E: Increased international exchange of professional knowledge, information, and education related to ethics, clinical practice, and supervision/clinical education in communication sciences and disorders will require a variety of dissemination, communication, educational, and professional practice delivery systems.

3rd Quarter Highlights

  • A list of international events related to speech-language pathology and audiology can be accessed on the ASHA Web site.
  • Ongoing updates to online curriculum resources for use in academic programs to foster acquisition of knowledge and skills in the area of telehealth/telepractice can be accessed on the ASHA Web site.
  • Access Schools promotes and disseminate descriptions of ASHA programs, services, and resources to members and external audiences. It is published 6 times per year, with more than 10,000 subscribers. Copies of Access Schools can be accessed on the ASHA Web site.
  • To promote the value-added benefit of belonging to the special interest divisions, the divisions were promoted at the ASHA Schools Conference; division ads were placed in The ASHA Leader; and divisions sponsored Web events. At the end of September, there were 30,055 division affiliates compared with 25,898 at the end of September 2006. Currently, there are 20,364 individuals who belong to at least one division.
  • Communicated with professionals from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Japan, and Saudi Arabia to obtain/share information on communication sciences and disorders. Members of the International Issues Board have communicated with professionals across the globe and completed a plan for members to interface with professionals in different regions of the globe to obtain/share information on communication sciences and disorders.
  • The International Governance on Terminology group that includes representatives from several countries developed a plan regarding universal terminology.
  • Articles related to international issues were published in The ASHA Leader: July 17, "CSD Learning Abroad—Opportunities for All"; August 14, "International Perspectives on AAC: South Africa • Ireland • Israel," "Communication Disorders in China," and "Early Intervention in the Ukraine." The ASHA Leader can be accessed online.
  • The Division on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders sponsored an invited session at the ASHA Convention on "Maintaining Dysphagia Skills over a Professional Lifetime." The session included a speaker from Germany.

There are 21 strategies in the work plan for Issue E. Following is the status for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters.
