Third Quarter Progress Report
July-September 2007

Issue D: Rapid increase in the knowledge and skill sets needed to provide quality professional services in a culturally competent manner across various practice settings will lead to specialization areas of clinical practice related to communication sciences and disorders.

3rd Quarter Highlights

  • Conducted the ASHA Schools Conference with the theme of "Honoring Cultures." Sessions were provided on school-based services for culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families. There were over 1,000 attendees at the Conference.
  • Diversity is specifically addressed in all ASHA systematic reviews and evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • The Division on Voice and Voice Disorders prepared a resolution to establish a working group on clinical voice assessment.
  • All Special Interest Division publications, including Perspectives and Web pages, promote ASHA resources as appropriate.
  • The Graduate Guide Survey instrument collected data on "specialty tracks." Information is available via EdFind on the ASHA Web site.
  • Drafted a report on emerging areas of practice in speech-language pathology and audiology.
  • Drafted a report on the Committee on Clinical Specialty Recognition (CCSR) survey data collected as part of the process for evaluating the Clinical Specialty Recognition program as a grassroots model.
  • Results of the International Survey were published in The ASHA Leader, "Going Global: Survey Gathers CDS Data from 22 Countries," September 4, 2007, page 34.
  • Disseminated Web-based curriculum resources for use in academic programs related to linguistic and cultural differences. The resources can be accessed on the ASHA Web site at Faculty Resources.
