Second Quarter Progress Report
April-June 2007

Issue D: Rapid increase in the knowledge and skill sets needed to provide quality professional services in a culturally competent manner across various practice settings will lead to specialization areas of clinical practice related to communication sciences and disorders.

2nd Quarter Highlights

  • Disseminated information about ASHA Web-based curriculum resources for use in academic programs related to linguistic and cultural differences at the 2007 CAPCSD Annual Conference and the 2007 Teaching Audiology Conference. 
  • Pilot tested a survey to conduct a practice analysis for the profession of audiology to identify and document the clinical activities and knowledge areas judged to be important for the competent performance of newly certified audiologists. The survey will be fielded in July 2007.
  • A new Committee on Social Communication Disorders met to develop clinical questions, start writing a technical report, and receive training from N-CEP on a systematic review and analysis of the evidence related to social communication disorders.
  • A new Committee on the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in the identification and Treatment of Auditory/Linguistic Processing Disorders in Children has been established.
  • A Committee to Revise the Guidelines for Audiologic Screening guidelines with the assistance of N-CEP has been established.
  • GRPP/N-CEP and Audiology submitted an RFQ to CDC to create EBP policy documents for pediatric audiologists serving newly identified children with hearing loss and their families.
  • Continued promotion of ASHA documents and resources to members via technical assistance and exhibiting at the Military Audiology Association, National Association of Future Doctors of Audiology, American Academy of Audiology, Association of Veteran's Administration Audiologists, and Self Help for Hard of Hearing Meeting (June).
  • The Committee on Clinical Specialty Recognition (CCSR) fielded a survey to seek input from the ASHA membership pertaining to members' level of interest and perceived value in obtaining specialty recognition, the desired areas of recognition, and proposed standards and processes for specialty recognition.
  • Finalized the ASHA data sources to be reviewed to identify emerging areas of practices and developed a set of questions and flow chart to guide us in the review process.
