Second Quarter Progress Report
April-June 2007

Issue C: A comprehensive scope of practice that includes all of the major components and new areas of practice in communication sciences and disorders enhances the visibility of the professions by consumers and stakeholders and their perceived value of the role of audiologists and speech-language pathologists.

2nd Quarter Highlights

  • Exhibited and provided information on the scope of practice in audiology, the role of the audiologist and other audiology resources and materials at meetings of the LHAA, EAA, AAA, MAA, and NAFDA.
  • Revised the private practice information packet with updated links to information related to corporate speech-language pathology.
  • Invited a speaker on corporate speech-language pathology to participate in the 2008 Health Care Conference/Business Institute.
  • Working with the Media and an upcoming issue of Access Audiology on "Buying and Selling a Private Practice."
  • Disseminated updated information to ASHA members on use of IDEA procedures for early intervening as it relates to literacy, wellness, prevention, and other underserved areas of practice.
  • Presentations were given by ASHA staff for state conventions or workshops in Connecticut and South Carolina on Responsiveness to Intervention (RTI), Early Intervening Services (EIS), and IDEA.
  • Staff participated in a planning meeting for an OSEP Conference on RTI/EIS to be held in December 2007.
  • Approximately 140 pages in the speech, language, and swallowing sections of the "for the public" site has been updated.
  • The updated consumer Web information includes literacy and wellness in the form of development milestones (and prevention in the form of what can a parent do to help a child’s development). The information has been reformatted to a more consumer-friendly style.
  • Audiology Professional Practices compiled ASHA resources in the area of hearing conservation for dissemination at conferences and meetings. Resource guides for pediatric audiology and audiologic rehabilitation have been updated.
  • Information on "under the direction of" was disseminated as part of ASHA exhibits at the annual convention of the National Education Association.
  • A Health Care Documentation Working Group was formed and met to develop documentation templates for adult health care disorders.

There are 18 strategies in the work plan for Issue C. Following is the status for the 1st and 2nd quarters.
