Issue B: A critical shortage and continuing attrition of doctoral-level faculty in higher education is affecting the preparation of professionals as well as the conduct of research in communication sciences and disorders.
3rd Quarter Highlights
- One hundred and one students have enrolled in the Mentoring Academic-Research Careers (MARC) program. Ninety-six mentees were matched to 34 mentors with 5 individuals remaining on a waiting list.
- Ten doctoral students were selected to participate in the Minority Student Leadership Program.
- Twelve students were funded (3 undergraduate students and 9 1st year SLP master's students) to participate in the Students Preparing for Academic and Research Careers (SPARC) award, to promote PhD career development for CSD undergraduate/graduate students through enhanced educational mentorship.
- One hundred and forty students are participating in the Student Empowered Professional (S.T.E.P.) mentoring program. Of those, 7 are currently enrolled in PhD programs with 10 masters level with expressed interest in pursuing a PhD. The S.T.E.P program is designed to encourage the continued recruitment and retention of racial/ethnic minority students through meaningful, one-to-one mentoring relationships; bi-weekly, guided learning experiences; and online resources via the ASHA Gathering Place.
- Six awards were made in the Advancing Academic and Research Careers (AARC) award, for new faculty who are in the beginning stages of their academic/research careers.
- Twenty-five senior and junior investigators participated in grant reviewer training as part of the 2007 New Century Scholars' and Young Investigators' program.
- Forty-six student research travel awards made and 10 mentor-mentee research awards made in conjunction with the annual research symposium to showcase student research and academic success.
- HES and EDFIND have been launched. The Higher Education Data System (HES) system is a collaborative effort of ASHA, CAPCSD, and CAA to facilitate comprehensive and consistent data collection and dissemination. Survey completion is critical to ensure all programs are reflected in reports and trends analysis in CSD. Program data and characteristics submitted via the HES will appear in EDFIND, the new online search engine for academic programs. EDFIND replaces ASHA's online Grad Guide and allows students and others to search for and learn about academic programs in CSD.
