The term "White" refers to people originating from any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. The 2005 American Community Survey estimates that the United States population was 288.4 million. Of the total, 220.1 million, or 76.3 percent, reported White. This number includes 215.3 million people, or 74.7 percent, who reported only White. Separate questions were asked on Hispanic or Latino origin. Hispanics who reported their race as White, either alone or in combination with one or more other races, are included in the numbers for Whites. [1]

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, approximately 58.7% of students enrolled in elementary and secondary schools in the Fall of 2003 were White, Non-Hispanic. [5] The US Census Bureau indicates that 11.8% of White children ages 5-17 speak a language other than English. [6]
