Opportunities for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists

ASHA has established several programs and resources for work within the field.

2008 Minority Student Leadership Program Call for Applications is Now Open!

The Minority Student Leadership Program (MSLP) is open to students who wish to enhance their leadership skills, interact with leaders in the professions, and learn how their association works. Now in its 10th year, this program has given over 275 students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds insight into their leadership abilities, a better understanding of how leaders affect change within ASHA, and has empowered these students to take risks and meet their own challenges. All students are eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds that have historically been under-represented in the Association. Visit MSLP Frequently Asked Questions for more information and to download an application packet.

2008 SPARC and AARC Awards

The competitions for the ASHA Awards Students Preparing for Academic & Research Careers (SPARC) and Advancing Academic-Research Careers (AARC) are now open until May 16, 2008. Both awards are components of ASHA's strategic objective to increase research commitment.

  • The SPARC Award is given to undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing an academic-research career in CSD.
  • Applications for both awards are accepted until May 16, 2008. For more information, please visit the ASHA student awards page.

Education

ASHA has created a list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Multicultural/Bilingual Emphasis Programs.

Empowerment through Volunteerism

ASHA's Multicultural Issues Board reminds us of the ABC's of Empowerment through volunteering in ASHA.

Mentoring

An online mentoring resource, The ASHA Gathering Place, engages mentees and mentors in discussions on a wide range of issues ranging from what to expect on your first day in the clinic to state-of-the-art practices presented by recognized experts in the field.

Networking

ASHA member's work together to ensure that appropriate assessment, intervention and information is distributed. Multicultural constituency groups connect to share current news and research.

The Special Interest Division on Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Populations (Division 14) was established to study, apply and advance knowledge of normal communication, communication disorders, and service delivery issues that affect African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, American Indians, and other culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

The list of International Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Associations provides contact information for international associations.

ASHA and NSSLHA Members have the opportunity to connect with each other in the Member Forums.

The MSLP is a leadership development program established for undergraduate seniors and graduate students who are enrolled in communication sciences and disorders programs. Aditionally, ASHA's Focused Initiative on the PhD Shortage in Higher Education will provide funding for 10 eligible candidates enrolled in a research doctoral program.

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is the national organization for graduate and undergraduate students interested in the study of human communication and related disabilities. NSSLHA is the only official national student association recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). NSSLHA has approximately 11,000 members with chapters in more than 294 colleges and universities. Visit the NSSLHA Web site for more information and to join.
