Please describe the specific qualifications and strengths you possess that make you the most qualified candidate for this office.

Professionally, I have worked as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools, served children and adults as a speech-language pathologist in private practice, and worked in marketing/public relations. As a business owner, I have extensive experience in office management, bookkeeping/accounting, and collaborative decision-making. I continue to provide speech-language treatment services to clients on a regular basis in a variety of settings: office, school, and home.

Leadership roles for ASHA include membership on the ASHA Executive Board, serving as the speaker of the Legislative Council, and also as assembly coordinator for the Speech-Language Pathology Assembly. At the state association level, I have served as a member of the TSHA Executive Board and as vice president for public information & marketing. I have also served in leadership roles for other non-profit groups, including the Dallas Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (DBIDA) and the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center League (DCACL).

In what ways have you been innovative and effective in your service on committees, boards, councils, and work settings?

Over the last 12 years, I have served in a number of leadership capacities in ASHA, most recently as a member of the ASHA Legislative Council (LC) representing constituents from Texas and as an ex-officio member of the ASHA Executive Board (EB). During my tenure as speaker of the Council for the ASHA LC, I worked closely and collaboratively with ASHA staff and other LC leaders to facilitate the creation of a positive, efficient, organized, and effective discussion environment to support divergent thoughts and opinions through consistent attention to detail, thorough agenda planning, and timely communication with the LC membership. As a member of the ASHA EB, I participated fully and equally in all EB discussions and served as a collaborative member of several EB subcommittees, particularly the ASHA Audit Committee and the ASHA Strategic Planning Committee.

What do you want ASHA members to know about you?

I believe in the value of the services that we as speech-language pathologists provide for the countless numbers of children and adults we serve on a daily basis. I also recognize many of the tremendous challenges facing service providers each day in the delivery of those much-needed services: caseload demands, excessive paperwork, personnel shortages, reimbursement denials, service provider encroachment, and federal/state/local service delivery requirements, for example.

The clock is ticking, and there is work to be done to meet the challenges facing ASHA speech-language pathologists. I have a strong work ethic, value different perspectives, believe in strategic planning and accountability to facilitate achievement of realistic and fiscally responsible goals and objectives, and welcome the opportunity to explore new ideas and opportunities for the advancement of the professions.
