Please describe the specific qualifications and strengths you possess that make you the most qualified candidate for this office.

I have been a clinician, supervisor, instructor, consultant, and administrator in health care organizations, universities, schools, private practice, and the not-for-profit sector. These experiences broadened my skills beyond the discipline, giving me enhanced appreciation for the interactions between professions. I am known for always taking initiative, and for being responsible, dependable, highly organized, a creative thinker, honest, confident, and detail oriented. I am adept at listening to all viewpoints prior to offering solutions or resolving conflicts. I am not afraid to seek guidance when necessary. I always try to represent all practice settings and issues objectively and am an effective communicator. I take pride in leading by example and am willing to dig in and get the work done. Patience, persistence, and the ability to motivate others are yet additional strengths. I am committed to advocating on behalf of the professions and have steadfastly served my regional, state and national associations.

In what ways have you been innovative and effective in your service on committees, boards, councils, and work settings?

Accomplishments in my regional and state associations include streamlining board meetings, recruiting effective management, introducing innovative convention programming, lobbying for school-based clinicians, and participating in developing continuing competency legislation for licensed professionals in the state of New York. As chair of the CAA site visit subcommittee, I recommended additional opportunities to recruit practitioner site visitors, resulting in an overwhelming response. I assisted in successfully redesigning the site visitor training workshop and instituting an evaluation process to enhance the education and qualifications of site visitors. Professionally, I have built several SLP and audiology departments from the ground up and created new programs to improve quality of care, increase revenue, and serve a wider community. To be innovative and effective, you must be willing to work collaboratively, embrace change, be enthusiastic, and take risks. I believe these attributes have led to many exciting opportunities including my current position of executive director of the National Aphasia Association.

What do you want ASHA members to know about you?

I have a strong commitment to the professions and the association. I am the quintessential volunteer and continue to take on responsibility without need for financial reward. I am incredibly passionate about my work and I have an amazing amount of energy! I am ambitious, dedicated, creative, loyal, and respectful. I never ask anyone to do something I am not willing to do myself and I always get the job done on or ahead of schedule. I am never afraid to express myself and am open to everyone's ideas and feedback. I have high expectations and standards, keeping focused on highest quality service delivery and consumer advocacy. I would consider it the ultimate privilege to be a member of the Board of Directors. On the personal side, I am kind, considerate, sensitive, generous, fun, entertaining, and have a unique style which may be epitomized by my extensive collection of eyeglasses!
