Please describe the specific qualifications and strengths you possess that make you the most qualified candidate for this office.

Throughout my career and service to ASHA, I have served in numerous leadership positions. These experiences have guided me to provide direction in governance, set high expectations and a clear vision, manage budgets, advocate for the professions, listen to, involve and motivate constituents, work collaboratively, provide quality services to clients and their families and provide creative solutions.

In the PPS, I have been selected as supervisor/administrator of the speech-language pathology program and as the director of special education. I am also a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh providing clinical supervision and teaching undergraduate and graduate students.

As a volunteer for ASHA, l served in leadership capacities at the local, state, and national association levels. My resume underscores my service as well as awards and honors I have received and an extensive list of invited presentations. My strength lies in the breadth of experiences I bring to this office.

In what ways have you been innovative and effective in your service on committees, boards, councils, and work settings?

As a leader in the PPS, I have elevated the importance of speech/language, and hearing services in the educational performance of all students. Staff representatives have become an integral part of educational teams, and curricula decisions. I serve on the superintendent's leadership team. During my term as program administrator, ASHA certification became a requirement for employment and alternate funding streams ensured the continuing quality of the program. Our program is recognized for its excellence and innovation.

As president of PSHA, I worked collaboratively with the 15 university programs to foster equity in all work environments.

As speaker of the Legislative Council (LC), I was instrumental in changing the council's focus and exploring alternative governmental structures for both the LC and the Executive Board.

As a member of the School Finance and Workload Committees, and co-author of IDEA products, I made a commitment that this information be disseminated to the membership. I have continued to present on these issues.

What do you want ASHA members to know about you?

I am committed and dedicated to our professions in all working environments. I believe that we are all responsible for advancing excellence of service to our clients and families, advocating for services for clients and families, attracting students to university programs and mentoring them, providing resources to our members, and ensuring that they can compete in a global economy marketing our professions to the public, attracting more men and people of color to our professions, and working collaboratively with other related professional organizations.

As a leader it is imperative to listen to our members, understand the issues that they are facing in their work environments and that we respond to the problems and concerns of the membership.

In all of my positions (elected, selected, paid and volunteer), I have been innovative and creative in response to the needs of members and clients/families. I believe in excellence, providing the resources to achieve excellence, and empowering members and families to be partners in this venture.
