Personnel Issues in Healthcare and Education

Third Quarter Progress Report
July-September 2007

For each of the 2007 Focused Initiatives, a work plan that includes the strategies to be completed in 2007 was developed. During the 3rd quarter of the year, the strategy implementation teams initiated activities necessary to complete the strategies by the dates indicated.

The following report highlights some of the actions that were initiated during the 3rd quarter and includes information on the status of all strategies included in the work plan at the end of the 3rd quarter.

3rd Quarter Highlights

  • Results of the 2007 Health Care Survey on shortages, attrition, and work conditions have been analyzed and reports are posted online.
  • Ribbons promoting supervision were created and distributed at the Schools Conference. A bookmark with Top Ten Reasons to Supervise also was developed.
  • Staff presented the keynote speech related to personnel shortages in healthcare and the action plan and state initiatives for healthcare at the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association state convention.
  • Two members of the cadre of expert member consultants established to help mobilize state associations in providing information and technical assistance on how to deal with efforts to reduce personnel qualifications in the states, has been able to meet with their targeted state, (Alabama and Massachusetts).
  • The National Coalition on Personnel Shortages in Special Education and Related Services met and discussed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (H.R. 2669), which creates a new loan forgiveness program for direct-loan borrowers who work in public-service fields for 10 years, reviewed the Coalition PowerPoint presentation, which the Coalition intends to use with policy-makers, and reviewed the mock-up of the Coalition Web site which the Coalition is getting ready to launch.
  • An ASHA Web page on supervision is now available including tips for 1st time supervisors, FAQs, and related information. It can be accessed at: Student Supervision.
  • A two part videoconference on how to conduct grassroots advocacy to address the legislative and regulatory challenges surrounding the issue of the use of qualified personnel and the maintenance of standards was held for the following states: Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Alaska, and Michigan.
  • Forty-five Reward Yourself campaign certificates ($50 voucher toward an ASHA product/service) have been awarded to members who gave a presentation about the professions to students in schools (K-12) or universities.

There are 29 strategies in the Personnel Issues in Healthcare and Education work plan. Following is the status for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters.
