ASHA Focused Initiatives

Evidence-Based Practice

Third Quarter Progress Report
July-September 2007

For each of the 2007 Focused Initiatives, a work plan that includes the strategies to be completed in 2007 was developed. During the 3rd quarter of the year, the strategy implementation teams initiated activities necessary to complete the strategies by the dates indicated.

The following report highlights some of the actions that were initiated during the 3rd quarter and includes information on the status of all strategies included in the work plan at the end of the 3rd quarter. For additional information related to ASHA's Focused Initiatives please contact Stan Dublinske, Senior Advisor for Planning at sdublinske@asha.org.

3rd Quarter Highlights

  • N-CEP in collaboration with the Academic Affairs team developed a set of sample curriculum resources related to evidence-based practice for dissemination to academic programs in CSD. These will be presented at the ASHA Convention. Feedback from attendees will be used to further develop the resources.
  • A meeting to support the development of applications for funding of research in clinical areas identified as ASHA priorities.was held to begin development of applications in the area of trauma in soldiers returning from the war in Iraq. Subsequently, two grant applications were developed and submitted.
  • A comprehensive listing of research issues has been developed by staff with input from volunteer leadership. Further activities to develop a research agenda will be coordinated through the newly established Science Advisory Board whose charge is to monitor, assess, and provide leadership regarding the discipline's research needs, challenges, and opportunities; assure communication and collaboration across ASHA's research entities; and develop a Research Agenda for the Association's research-related activities.
  • The National Center for Evidence-Based Practice (N-CEP) promoted the availability of evidence-based practice information via articles in The ASHA Leader, on the researcher email list, and ASHA's Audiology Web page.
  • N-CEP maintains a Web site that provides information related to evidence-based practice for ASHA members. It can be accessed at: Evidence-Based Practice.
  • N-CEP has initiated over 10 Evidence-Based Systematic Reviews. An ASHA Web site with a searchable registry of systemic reviews has been established and can be accessed at: EBP Compendium.
  • N-CEP maintains a Web Forum for connecting researchers and clinicians interested in collaborative research projects. The Forum can be accessed online.
