Focused Initiative: PhD Shortage in Higher Education
Second Quarter Progress Report (April-June)

For each of the 2006 Focused Initiatives, a work plan that includes the strategies to be completed in 2006 was developed. During the 2nd quarter of the year, the strategy implementation teams initiated activities necessary to complete the strategies by the dates indicated. View the 2006 work plan for each Focused Initiative. The following report highlights some of the actions that were initiated during the 2nd quarter and includes information on the status of all strategies included in the work plan at the end of the 2nd quarter.
2nd Quarter Highlights
- "Getting a PhD: Resources to Get You Started Today" packets and "Reward Yourself with a Career as a College Professor" brochure and bookmarks will be distributed at the ASHA Schools Conference 2006.
- The grant applications for the Interdisciplinary Research Young Investigator and the New Century Scholars award program have been received and will be reviewed by the ASHF.
- Applications were received from doctoral students for participation in the Minority Student Leadership Programs (MSLP) designed to enhance their leadership skills within the discipline. 10 doctoral students will be chosen from the pool to participate in this year's program.
- Developed the Student to Empowered Professional (S.T.E.P.) online mentoring program Web pages.
- The 2006 applications for the Students Preparing for Academic and Research Careers (SPARC) have been received and will be reviewed for possible funding.
- Work continues on development of the higher education data collection system [Higher Education System (HES)].
- The Mentoring Academic Research Careers (MARC) online mentoring portal Web pages are being completed and will go live during the 3rd quarter.
- Development of the "Integration of Clinical Practice and Research: Quality Indicators for Program Self Assessment" has been completed and will be available on the "Teaching Tools" page of ASHA Faculty, Researchers and PhD Students Web site during the 3rd quarter.
NOTE: Many of the strategies included in the Evidence-Based Practice work plan are ongoing. Please access the 2006 work plan to review all of the strategies being implemented.
There are 16 strategies in the PhD Shortage in Higher Education work plan. Following is the status for the 1st and 2nd quarter.
