FACILITATING TEAM MEMBER RESPONSIBLE FOR WORK PLAN:

ISSUE: Demographic and caseload changes related to culturally/linguistically diverse populations require the acquisition of knowledge and skills by ASHA members to meet the needs of these groups, the provision of additional and improved services to these populations, and an ASHA membership that reflects the culturally diverse groups in society.
OUTCOME 1: Increase the number of racial/ethnic minority members of ASHA.
STRATEGIES FOR 2003:
- By December 31, 2003, the Professional Development team in collaboration with the Membership and Academic Affairs units and the Office of Multicultural Affairs will have developed a compendium of best practices for recruiting and retaining racial/ethnic minorities into the professions that includes successful strategies used in in other professions and in CSD programs for dissemination to CSD faculty through ASHA’s Web site. A copy of the compendium will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Public Relations Cluster will expand dissemination of the career awareness campaigns to promote the professions to African American and Latino populations via development and dissemination of print and web banner ads and posters to targeted colleges/universities with large African American and Latino populations, and to targeted minority media; the Send a Message Kit will be revised to include the materials developed through the campaigns and copies disseminated to each ASHA accredited academic program. A report on the distribution of campaign materials will be provided to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Membership unit in conjunction with the Office of Multicultural Affairs will have evaluated the feasibility of replicating the online mentoring program currently in use for the Minority Student Leadership Program (MSLP) by piloting the online program with participants in the Pathways to Success Mentor program. A report documenting the potential for replicating the program for other groups will be developed and submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Multicultural Affairs unit will have coordinated development of a grant application to seek funding to establish an experiential program for high school students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds, to promote awareness of the CSD professions as career options. A copy of the grant application(s) and a listing of the funding sought and disposition of requests will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Membership unit in collaboration with the Multicultural Affairs unit will have developed a kit containing modules and instructions for replicating the Minority Student Leadership Program at state conventions. A copy of the kit will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Multicultural Affairs unit will have coordinated development of a grant application to seek funding to establish a partnership with a number of CSD Academic Programs to establish and implement programs/strategies that have proven successful in other institutions/professions to increase the racial/ethnic minority enrollment and graduation in those academic institutions. A copy of the grant application(s) and a listing of the funding sought and disposition of requests will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
OUTCOME 2: All ASHA members will have access to ASHA resources developed to facilitate the acquisition of cultural competency for increasing and improving service delivery to multicultural populations.
STRATEGIES FOR 2003:
- By December 31, 2003, the Office of Multicultural Affairs in collaboration with the Professional Development team will have developed a self-assessment tool to be made available on ASHA’s website to assist ASHA members in evaluating their cultural competence for providing clinical service. A copy of the self-assessment tool will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Public Relations Cluster in collaboration with the Marketing and Sales Cluster and the Office of Multicultural Affairs will have developed resources for speech-language pathologists and audiologists to use in marketing their services to multicultural populations, including a brochure on bilingual language development for parents/consumers. A copy of the resources will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the ASHA Professional Development team in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Affairs will develop an instructional CD-ROM on African American English and its clinical implications to be made available for sale through ASHA’s Product Sales. A copy of the CD-ROM will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the ASHA Professional Development unit in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Affairs will have developed an instructional videotape on second language acquisition to be made available for sale through ASHA’s Product Sales. A copy of the videotapes will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Office of Multicultural Affairs unit in collaboration with Academic Affairs and Accreditation units will develop resources for multicultural infusion in academic curricula, and identify strategies for evaluating the multicultural content in educational curricula in CAA-accredited graduate programs to be shared with CAA site visitors. A copy of the resources and the materials provided to CAA site visitors will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By July 31, 2003, the Office of Multicultural Affairs in collaboration with the School Services unit and the ASHA Professional Development unit will sponsor a speaker at the 2003 Schools Conference on cultural competence in clinical practice. The name of the speaker and a copy of the evaluation results from the conference session will be provided to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
- By December 31, 2003, the Office of Multicultural Affairs in collaboration with the Surveys and Information unit will survey ASHA’s bilingual members to determine resources needed for enhancing clinical practice to bilingual populations. A copy of the survey and results will be submitted to the Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs.
