RESOLVED, That The Roles of the Speech-Language Pathologist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): Guidelines be published in a supplement of The ASHA Leader, be posted on the ASHA professional Web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center, be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference, and that the availability of the guidelines be announced in The ASHA Leader.

RATIONALE:  Pursuant to EB-4-2001, the Ad Hoc Committee on Speech-Language Pathology Practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was established with the charge to examine this area of practice; determine and develop the appropriate practice policy documents; and to explain, support, and guide ASHA members and other interested parties regarding speech-language pathology services to neonates, their families, and other caregivers.  Members of the committee who prepared the guidelines are Justine J. Sheppard (Chair), Joan C. Arvedson, Alexandra Heinsen-Combs, Lemmietta G. McNeilly, Susan M. Moore, Meri. S. Rosenzweig Ziev, and Diane Paul-Brown (ex officio). Celia Hooper, ASHA vice president for speech-language pathology practices (2003–2005), served as the monitoring officer.  These guidelines are related to the roles and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists working in the NICU.  The committee previously completed a technical report, which was approved by the ASHA Executive Board in October 2003 (EB 34-2003), and a position statement and knowledge and skills document, which were approved by the ASHA Legislative Council in November 2003 (LC- SLP/SLS 9-2003 and 10-2003, respectively).
