RESOLVED, That the document, Guidelines for Addressing Acoustics in Educational Settings, developed by the Working Group on Classroom Acoustics be approved; and further
RESOLVED, That the Guidelines for Addressing Acoustics in Educational Settings be published in the next annual supplement to The ASHA Leader, be posted on the Web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference.
RATIONALE: The Guidelines for Addressing Acoustics in Educational Settings and Acoustics in Educational Settings: Position Statement and Technical Report were developed by the ASHA Working Group on Classroom Acoustics to address the need for students and teachers to have access to appropriate classroom acoustics. In addition, these documents affirm the ANSI S12.60-2002 Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements, and Guidelines for Schools that were developed by an ANSI Working Group of which ASHA was a member. Through these documents, ASHA seeks to provide audiologists, state and local education agencies, professionals involved in designing, constructing, and equipping new or renovated schools and classrooms with guidance, information, and resources that define and highlight the need for and methods to achieve appropriate classroom acoustics. These guidelines can be used to delineate minimal classroom acoustic standards, confirm and support the role of and need for audiologists' involvement in classroom acoustics, and outline the complementary roles of audiologists and acoustical consultants.
