RESOLVED, That the document entitled “Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech- Language Pathologists and Audiologists to Provide Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services” developed by the ASHA Multicultural Issues Board be approved as ASHA policy; and further

RESOLVED, That “Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists to Provide Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services” be published in the next annual supplement to The ASHA Leader, be posted on the professional web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference.

Rationale: The ASHA Multicultural Issues Board (MIB) was asked to review ASHA policy related to culturally and linguistically diverse populations as a part of a more comprehensive review of the Association policy documents.  The Board found that the position paper entitled, “Clinical Management of Communicatively Handicapped Linguistic Minority Populations,” which was approved in 1985 was still valid, but in need of more current terminology and documentation supporting the policy.  While reviewing that document, it became apparent that there was also a need beyond the position paper to delineate the knowledge and skills needed by speech-language pathologists and audiologists to provide culturally appropriate clinical care.  As a result, the MIB developed this knowledge and skills document entitled, “Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists to Provide Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services.”  This knowledge and skills document provides guidance on cultural and linguistic issues that may arise in practice areas so that the clinician can comfortably and ethically provide services to all clients/patients.
