Abstract: Approve “Reading and Writing in Children and Adolescents: Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists"

RESOLVED, That “Reading and Writing in Children and Adolescents: Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists” be approved as policy by ASHA.

RESOLVED, That the "Reading and Writing in Children and Adolescents: Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists” be published in the next annual Supplement to The ASHA Leader, be posted on the Web site, and be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center and Fax-on-Demand, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference.

RATIONALE:   This document represents the work of the Ad Hoc Committee on Reading and Written Language, whose charge was to develop a family of documents regarding speech-language pathologists working with children and adolescents in the area of reading and writing.  The Ad Hoc Committee responded to the 2000 Executive Board Charge and requests from ASHA members by preparing this knowledge and skills document that describes the five areas of specialized knowledge and related skills needed by speech-language pathologists.  These include the nature of literacy, normal literacy development, disorders of language and literacy, relevant clinical tools and methods, and the principals of collaboration, leadership, and research.

OUTCOME(S):  Increase the number of speech-language pathologists who have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide prevention, identification, assessment, and treatment services to further the reading and writing skills of children and adolescents and to collaborate and assume leadership roles on educational teams.

BUDGET IMPACT:   Funds for the publication and dissemination of this document are already included in the operating budget of the Association.

PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT:  The Association will make available to the membership, university faculty, and members of related professions complete family of documents related to literacy.  The knowledge and skills document on reading and writing development and instruction is the fourth in a series that includes a position statement, guidelines, and a technical report.  This important resource document will demonstrate ASHA’s leadership in meeting the educational needs of speech-language pathologists in the area of literacy instruction.

The knowledge and skills statement will be submitted to the Resolutions Committee.  The document will be published in accordance with the approved Guidelines for the Publication and Distribution of Association documents.
