RESOLVED, That the revised “Guidelines for Competencies in Auditory Evoked Potential Measurement and Clinical Applications” be approved; and further
RESOLVED, That the guidelines be published in the next annual Supplement to The ASHA Leader, be posted on the Web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference.
RATIONALE: Measuring auditory evoked potentials is an integral part of the practice of audiology. A document delineating the current skills required to perform these measurements and apply them clinically would provide much needed guidance for audiologists. Additionally, guidance on these skills and clinical applications will be valuable for academic programs and continuing education providers in the development of courses for audiologists.
OUTCOME(S): Increased awareness on the part of ASHA members and others of the competencies required to perform auditory evoked potential measurement and to understand the clinical applications. An updated resource for academic programs and continuing education providers.
BUDGET IMPACT: Funds for the publication and dissemination of these guidelines are already included in the operating budget of the Association. The minimal costs include $3,900 to print the 6 pages in the 2002 Supplement to The ASHA Leader and $300 to meet expenses for inclusion of these guidelines in the 2004 update of the ASHA Desk Reference .
PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: If passed, ASHA will have “Guidelines for Competencies in Auditory Evoked Potential Measurement and Clinical Applications” that reflect the current skill competencies required to perform these measurements.
If not passed, ASHA's existing guidelines will not reflect current practice.
