Abstract: Approve the document entitled "Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in Swallowing and Feeding Disorders: Position Statement"
RESOLVED, That the document entitled "Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in Swallowing and Feeding Disorders: Position Statement" be approved as policy of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; and further
RESOLVED, That "Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in Swallowing and Feeding Disorders: Position Statement" be published in the next annual Supplement to The ASHA Leader and that it be posted on the professional Web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center and Fax-on-Demand, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference.
RATIONALE: (Statement telling why this resolution was prepared. Indicate issue of concern. Include reference to related policies.)
This document represents the work of the ASHA–Special Interest Division 13 (Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders) Dysphagia Document Revision Working Group, which reviewed existing policy documents on dysphagia and revised those in need of updating. Since there was previously no stand-alone position statement on dysphagia, the Working Group determined that a position statement should be developed to comply with the Association’s current operational guidelines on policy documents.
Since the original policy documents on dysphagia were written, significant advances in the knowledge base and practice of dysphagia have occurred. The position statement affirms for internal and external audiences the primary role of the speech-language pathologist in the management of swallowing and feeding disorders.
OUTCOME(S): (Statement indicating the desired benefits for ASHA members or changes in the Association or its programs. The outcome statement should be based on identified member needs, issues, and the rationale for the resolution; and must indicate the direction or amount of change desired, and be measurable.)
This policy document indicates the official position of ASHA on the roles of the speech-language pathologist in swallowing and/or feeding disorders.
BUDGET IMPACT: (Statement describing how the proposed action will affect the Association’s financial status and if necessary, indicate where money will come from if not included in the budget.)
Funds for the publication and dissemination of this position statement are already included in the operating budget of the Association.
PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: (Statement indicating the impact on the Association if the resolution is passed or the consequences if it is not passed.)
Approval of this document will update ASHA’s position on the roles of the speech-language pathologist in swallowing and/or feeding disorders.
If the resolution is not passed, ASHA will not have a separate or updated position statement on this broad area of practice that affects over 50% of ASHA speech-language pathology members.
