RATIONALE: This document represents the work of members of Special Interest Division 11, Administration and Supervision; members of the profession with expertise in the training and supervision of speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs); and National Office staff in the speech-language pathology unit. The document was prepared to inform and support speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in their supervision of SLPAs.
This document identifies the requisite knowledge and skills for competent and ethical use and supervision of SLPAs in any extension of service. The knowledge and skills specified in the document are consistent with the position statements on "Clinical Supervision in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology" (ASHA, 1985) the "Guidelines for the Training, Credentialing, Use, and Supervision of Support Personnel in Speech-Language Pathology" (ASHA, 1996), and the criteria for registration of speech-language pathology assistants (ASHA, 2000).
OUTCOME(S): (Statement indicating the desired benefits for ASHA members or changes in the Association or its programs. The outcome statement should be based on identified member needs, issues, and the rationale for the resolution; and must indicate the direction or amount of change desired, and be measurable.)
Increase the number of SLPs with the knowledge and skills necessary to competently supervise SLPAs, and provide academic programs with guidance on the topic for their supervision courses.
BUDGET IMPACT: The cost for printing and dissemination of this document is $2,100 in direct expenses and is included in the budget.
PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: Approval of this document will assist SLPs who want to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate supervision to SLPAs.
If it is not adopted, ASHA’s influence in this area will be addressed only through quantitative statements about the amount of supervision of SLPAs that is required. The profession will remain silent about the knowledge and skills supervisors must have to provide competent and ethical supervision to SLPAs.
