LC 18-2001

Abstract: Establish a year of recognition for ASHA volunteers

RESOLVED, That ASHA acknowledge its many members who volunteer their leadership, professional expertise, energy and time in advancing the mission, agenda, business and vision of the Association by establishing a year long celebration and tribute entitled; "2003: ASHA's Year of the Volunteer," and

RESOLVED, That appropriate forms of recognition for these volunteers be developed.

RATIONALE: The CNE recognizes the need to salute leadership efforts and to continue to promote volunteerism and leadership, especially at a time when attitudes toward volunteerism are changing as generational differences are noted in the changing priorities of personal and professional obligations. Much of ASHA's business is conducted by volunteers who give up their personal time to work in governance, programs and projects for the Association and the membership. It is fitting, therefore, that ASHA express its appreciation to its volunteers and leaders who have contributed in various ways, including service on EB, LC, Committees and Boards, Special Interest Divisions, Convention (presenters, support staff, etc.), ASHA Educational Programs (program/materials developers, presenters, etc.), Publications (authors, editors, reviewers, etc.), Peer Reviewers, Survey Respondents, Hill Visits, PAC, Foundation, ASHA representatives to other professional organizations, etc. The volunteers recognized should have made contributions during a prescribed period, perhaps since 2000, the new millennium.

"Recognition" is a valuable tool for expressing appreciation. It is believed that ASHA should let its volunteers know what a valued resource they are through this special tribute, and further, this visible tribute should serve to inspire newer professionals to consider service to the Association. Appropriate forms of recognition might include such things as special certificates of recognition, convention ribbons, group recognition at the Honors ceremony and reception, listing in The Asha Leader with other ASHA recognitions (Honors and Fellows) and letters of recognition and appreciation to employers.

OUTCOME(S):

1. This initiative will demonstrate our value and appreciation for shared commitment and volunteer service to the professions and the Association.

2. This initiative will increase volunteerism in ASHA

BUDGET IMPACT:  With the exception of special certificates and letters to employers, the other proposed forms have been tied to existing ASHA convention expenses for publication, ribbons and reception. The budget for the remaining forms of recognition would not exceed $3,000.

PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: If passed, the recognition of volunteers should improve volunteerism in ASHA, increases will be noted in the Committee Pool, acceptance of EB and LC nominations by qualified candidates, increase in submissions of manuscripts and convention papers.
