Abstract: Rescind LC 44-83 requiring LC elections to be held in April
RESOLVED, That resolution LC 44-83 which requires LC elections to be held in April be rescinded.
RATIONALE: In light of ASHA’s overall interest in improving efficiency of operations and CNE’s efforts to increase the candidate pool for LC and EB elections, the CNE has redesigned the LC and EB election schedule to align the nomination-election schedule for LC and EB and shorten the time frame to 12 months between nominations, elections, and the beginning of service. Currently, it takes 15 months for LC and 24 months for EB from nomination to beginning of service. This time frame discourages candidates and affects the number of professionals interested in running. The time frame is much shorter in other organizations.
OUTCOME(S): Reducing the time frame and improving efficiency should increase voter turnout and increase the number of members interested in running.
BUDGET IMPACT: There are no additional direct costs involved. The cost of conducting the election is included in the governance budget. Passage of this resolution will permit mailing of ballots at a time other than the Spring.
PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: Better efficiency at the national office. A wider range of candidates will run. If not passed, the candidate pool may not be increased. No opportunity for candidates to meet with members at convention.
