Abstract: Approve and adopt as ASHA policy the Knowledge and Skills Required for the Practice of Audiologic/Aural Rehabilitation document
RESOLVED, That the Knowledge and Skills Required for the Practice of Audiologic/Aural Rehabilitation document be approved and adopted as ASHA policy to update the 1984 document Definitions of and Competencies for Aural Rehabilitation; and further
RESOLVED, That the executive summary of the Knowledge and Skills Required for the Practice of Audiologic/Aural Rehabilitation be published in The ASHA Leader’s next annual supplement or other appropriate publication, and that the full document be posted on the Web site, be made available through Fax-on-Demand, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference .
RATIONALE: The ASHA Working Group on Audiologic Rehabilitation was charged with reviewing and revising the 1984 definitions of and competencies for aural rehabilitation. ASHA, audiologists, and speech-language pathologists have used the 1984 document to ensure quality service delivery, to assist in practice policy development, and to serve as a guide for pre- and post-service training. The document has also been used to support the role of audiologists and speech-language pathologists in aural rehabilitation (AR) within reimbursement and policy development organizations and agencies. Advances and changes in AR service delivery have continued to occur since the 1984 document was published. Rather than listing AR activities and services clinicians provide, the present document delineates the knowledge and skills necessary for the provision of AR services and defines AR as an ongoing process.
OUTCOME(S): Approval and publication of the Knowledge and Skills Required for the Practice of Audiologic/Aural Rehabilitation will provide ASHA-member audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and hearing and speech scientists with guidance in the development of AR programs, protocols, and policies. The document will also be useful to policy makers, reimbursement agencies, federal/state/local education agencies, and other interested parties by demonstrating that audiologists and speech-language pathologists are uniquely qualified to provide AR services and by assisting them in policy and program development.
BUDGET IMPACT: The budget impact of $2,400 is for publication of the executive summary of the document.
PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: Approval and publication of the Knowledge and Skills Required for the Practice of Audiologic/Aural Rehabilitation will provide ASHA-member audiologists and speech-language pathologists, consumers, academic programs, policy makers, and other interested parties with guidance on the development, implementation, and provision of AR services.
