ASHA Leadership

DeAnne Wellman Owre

Vice President for Government Relations and Public Policy

During her career, DeAnne Wellman Owre has served in a variety of settings. She is currently employed as a speech-language pathologist and is Chair of the speech-language pathology department of the Woonsocket, Rhode Island school system. She has also worked as an SLP in the medical setting, including serving in hospital clinics, serving as a regional clinical supervisor responsible for a staff of SLPs in 38 skilled nursing facilities, developing dysphagia programs, and lobbying for the removal of the Medicare Cap.

Professional activities outside the work setting have included serving as a founding member and first Coordinator of ASHA Special Interest Division 16, School-Based Issues, President of the Rhode Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Chair of the Rhode Island Department of Health Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology, member of the ASHA Legislative Council (9 years), co-chair of the ASHA School Facility Guidelines Working Group and member of the ASHA Dysphagia Intervention in Schools and the Performance Review Instrument Working Groups. DeAnne has co-authored the ASHA booklet, Literacy and Communication Expectations: Grades K-5 and has written professional articles for ASHA Division Perspectives, The ASHA Leader, Advance magazine and Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (pending).

DeAnne was awarded her BA in communication disorders from the University of Wyoming and her MS from Worcester State College in Massachusetts. An ASHA Fellow, she has received the ASHA Foundation Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award for Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association Outstanding Volunteer Award.
