Thomas J. Hallahan received his BS in speech-language pathology and audiology from the State University of New York in Geneseo, his MA in audiology from The Ohio State University, his MEd in administration, planning, and social policy from Harvard University, and his ScD in audiology from Boston University. For the past 13 years, he has been employed as an associate professor at Salem State College (SSC) in Salem, Massachusetts, teaching courses in communication sciences and disorders, inclusive education, special education policy, and social justice.
Additionally, Dr. Hallahan consults on a weekly basis with the Massachusetts Medicaid program (MassHealth), overseeing their prior authorization process for audiology and hearing aid services. Dr. Hallahan also consults with the state’s Department of Public Health, providing clinical and rehabilitative services to inmates within the state's correctional system.
Before coming to SSC, Dr. Hallahan taught for 4 years at Boston University. He has also been in private audiology practice, worked as an audiologist within hospital and ear, nose, and throat settings, and served as a public school speech pathologist. Dr. Hallahan has served as president of both the Massachusetts Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Council of State Association Presidents. He has served on numerous committees and councils for ASHA, including the Board of Directors, Legislative Council, Political Action Committee, and Multicultural Issues Board. However, his greatest accomplishment has been that of single-parenting his Cambodian-born son, Kiric. Dr. Hallahan returns to Cambodia annually to work with a number of local nongovernmental organizations working in the areas of disability rights and inclusive education.
