Board of Directors

Meeting Report—March 2009

Sue Hale, President

The Board of Directors (BOD) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) met for a short session following the Advisory Council Meetings on the afternoon of March 22, 2009, at the ASHA National Office. Following are highlights of the Board's discussions.

President's Opening Remarks

Retiring Board of Directors Manager Lu Cannon was recognized and thanked for her excellent service to the Board. Lu is retiring from ASHA on April 17 after 51 years of service to the association.

Advisory Council Meeting

President Hale congratulated Nancy Alarcon, Chair of the Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Council, George Purvis, Chair of the Audiology Advisory Council, Vic Gladstone, CSO for Audiology, and Lemmie McNeilly, CSO for Speech-Language Pathology, on their excellent work in preparing and conducting the Advisory Council meetings. The Board was very pleased with the useful feedback provided by the councils and will be using that information as decisions are made at future Board meetings. Advisory Council members will be provided with additional information via the advisory councils' collaboration sites and will be asked for further comments throughout the year.

Update on the Special Interest Division Task Force

Patty Prelock, Vice President for Standards and Ethics in Speech-Language Pathology, updated the Board regarding the Special Interest Division task force. A report is in progress and will be presented to the Board in the next few months.

Property Update

Larry Walker, our real estate consultant who is assisting ASHA with the sale of 10801 Rockville Pike, discussed various options for selling the property in this very challenging real estate market. The land remains a valuable asset and we are exploring numerous options for selling the property. The Board was reminded that the sale of the property does not impact the association's operating budget since the building fund is not part of regular operations.

Committee on Committees

Tommie Robinson, President-Elect and Chair of the Committee on Committees, encouraged Board members seeking to fill committee and board vacancies to consider skills and knowledge of possible appointees and to be particularly mindful of looking for volunteers from the individuals who have been in the committee pool for some time without being selected. He said Board members should also consider Leadership Development Program participants who have not been appointed, and Minority Student Leadership Program participants.
