Rewards and Challenges Associated With Being a Mentor
by the Specialty Board on Fluency Disorders

In the professions of communication sciences and disorders, there is a time-honored tradition of passing down knowledge and skills from one generation to the next. Mentoring is a process by which experienced practitioners impart the 'art and craft' of their professions to newer clinicians. The goal of mentorship is not to clone the mentors, but to enable the mentees to grow and develop beyond them, to further the profession as they make their own marks upon it. This presentation defines and discusses the importance of mentoring. Topics include mentoring styles, relevant goals, and overcoming potential barriers.
