New Investigator Roundtable

12:00 noon–1:00 p.m.
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Room 210A

The tenth annual New Investigator Roundtable will provide a venue for individuals who are in the beginning stages of their academic-research careers to interact with more seasoned investigators. Through rather informal, "roundtable" discussions, new investigators (graduate, AuD, and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty members) will meet with individuals in the discipline who can offer advice concerning successful academic-research careers (e.g., beginning a research career, balancing research and other activities, identifying appropriate research funding, and interviewing for a professional position).

17th Annual Research Symposium

Sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)
Friday, November 16
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Rooms listed with sessions

The theme of this year's symposium, which will encompass four Convention Program sessions, is Genetic and Biological Pathways Underpinning Communication Disorders Across the Lifespan. This day-long symposium brings together distinguished researchers in the area of genetics, who will address topics such as genetic and environmental influences on early language development, clinical interventions developed as a result of an increased understanding of genetics, and the ethical and social implications of genetic testing for communication disorders. This year's symposium is designed to inform professionals and researchers about the current methodological advances and new discoveries in the area of genetics and to translate discoveries in this area into clinical research and practice related to predicting intervention outcomes and designing future intervention methods. Opportunities for informal interaction with the speakers will be provided. Sessions are open to all Convention registrants; there is no additional registration fee. Symposium participants are strongly encouraged to attend all four sessions.

The presentations are listed in the program book: Session 0521; Session 1363; Session 1497; Session 1562.

Closing Party

Saturday, November 17
6:00–8:30 p.m.
Boston Public Library

The Closing Party is always fun and gives everyone a chance to say goodbye. This year's party will be held at the country's first free library, located at Copley Square in the Back Bay area of Boston on Boylston Street.

The party will be held in the McKim building named after architect Charles Folleen McKim. In addition to its 6.1 million books, the library boasts over 1 million rare books and manuscripts, a wealth of maps, musical scores, and prints. It holds several first edition folios by William Shakespeare, original music scores from Mozart to Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," and, in its rare book collection, the personal library of John Adams. Due to the extent of the collections, many items are displayed on a rotating basis.

You will have the opportunity to see Bates Hall, which is acknowledged by many to be architecturally one of the most important rooms in the world. Bates Hall features a majestic barrel-arched ceiling enclosed by half domes on each end, English oak bookcases, busts of eminent authors and Bostonians, and a richly carved limestone balcony.

Murals entitled the "Quest of the Holy Grail," by American artist Edwin Austin Abbey, grace the walls of the Abbey Room on the second floor. The murals are composed of a series of 15 panels featuring 150 life-sized figures illustrating the Arthurian legend. The room also features a beautiful fireplace of French rouge antique marble, dark oak wainscoting, and a beamed ceiling modeled after one in the library of the Doge's Palace in Venice.

Plan to join your friends and colleagues for this special event in a unique and beautiful venue. There will be food, drink, and lots of entertainment. Tickets are complimentary to registered members, $20 for guests. Space is limited so order your tickets early on your registration form.

3:30–4:30 p.m.
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Room 107A

The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) will present information on its 2007 Position Statement at ASHA.

The last JCIH statement was published in the year 2000. Please make sure to join the JCIH at this session to learn about the changes and additions recommended in the new position statement.
