CAA Call for Nominations - Due June 1st

The Nominating Committee for the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) is soliciting nominations to fill vacancies on the CAA for six (6) positions. These positions are for four-year terms beginning on January 1, 2009.

The CAA Nominating Committee is seeking to fill:
4 Academic Positions1 Practitioner Position1 Public Member Position



Academic Positions (1 Audiology, 3 Speech-Language Pathology)

Individuals nominated for these academic positions must:

  • hold a faculty/staff position in a CAA-accredited program
  • have an earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution with a rank of associate professor or above, or be a comparably experienced clinical educator

Additionally, the nominating committee encourages individuals to apply who have one or more of the following characteristics:

  • clinical teaching (supervision) as his or her primary role
  • experience as an academic accreditation site visitor
  • experience with distance learning environments
  • currently holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology or the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology

Please note: Because no more than one individual from a specific educational institution may serve on the Council at any one time, individuals from the following institutions will not be eligible to serve in 2009: California State University-Chico, James Madison University, University of Kentucky, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, University of South Dakota, and Wichita State University.

Practitioner Position (1 Speech-Language Pathology)

Individuals nominated for the practitioner position must:

  • be employed full-time in non academic settings. (Adjunctive or complementary appointment to a university program shall not disqualify practitioner members, provided they are employed full time in a non university setting.)
  • currently hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology

Additionally, the nominating committee encourages individuals to apply who have one or more of the following characteristics:

  • experience in supervising students and/or clinical fellows is preferred
  • experience as an academic accreditation site visitor

Public Member Position (1 available)

Individuals nominated for the public member position must not be a member of the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology. In addition, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education, a "representative of the public" is a person who is not: a) an employee, member of the governing board, owner, or shareholder of or consultant to a program that either is accredited or has applied for accreditation by the CAA; b) a member of any trade association or membership organization related to, affiliated with, or associated with the CAA; or c) a spouse, parent, child, or sibling of an individual identified in a) or b).

General Requirements

Individuals interested in serving on the CAA should be familiar with the charge to the CAA to understand the responsibilities involved. Service on the Council will require commitment and time. During certain periods of the year, it is anticipated that Council members may average 4-6 hours per week for CAA activities. Members establish accreditation standards, conduct in-depth evaluations of accreditation and reaccreditation applications to determine compliance with established standards, accredit qualified graduate programs, and monitor compliance over the period of accreditation through review of annual reports.

The CAA holds two 3½-day meetings per year at the ASHA National Office and a 1-day meeting in conjunction with the ASHA Convention.


Nominations and Elections Process

The CAA Nominating Committee will prepare a slate of candidates from the nominations received, consisting of at least two individuals for each position. The slate and ballots for the academic positions will be sent to all CAA-accredited programs for election. The slate of nominees for the practitioner position will be forwarded to ASHA's Board of Directors for appointment. The CAA Nominating Committee will select the public member from the applications received.
