Working With Adolescents

Research indicates that speech or language disorders in adolescents can lead to social, emotional, and behavior issues and affect their literacy skills and academic success in schools.  Yet surveys indicate that adolescents with speech and language disorders are not adequately served in many schools across the country. Teachers and other professionals in schools may lack awareness of how addressing speech and language problems for this age group can improve student’s performance.

Providing speech and language therapy for adolescents has its unique challenges and may require using different intervention and service delivery approaches than are used with younger students. The articles on this page serve as a guide for working with adolescents.
