SIG Volunteer Leadership Handbook

SIG Position Descriptions

SIG Ex Officio

  • Facilitates the work of the SIG to ensure adherence to Association policies and procedures
  • Ensures the SIG satisfies minima expectations of operation
  • Ensures SIG input to ASHA activities and programs
  • Serves as first point of contact for CC requests (e-mail blasts, online chats, etc.)
  • Serves as a staff resource on the SIG affiliate online community
  • Reviews Perspectives content
  • Identifies, in collaboration with the Coordinating Committee, dates and agenda items for CC meetings and conference calls
  • Develops the SIG budget with the SIG Director

SIG Director

  • Serves as ex officio to the Board of Special Interest Group Coordinators (BSIGC)
  • Orients Coordinators and new Coordinating Committee members
  • Oversees the operations of the SIG Program
    • facilitates/monitors initiatives/activities of SIG Coordinating Committees and subcommittees to ensure conformity to Association policies and procedures
    • supervises the production of SIG publications and development and maintenance of online content, and oversees (prepares and maintains) SIG budgets
    • oversees (prepares and maintains) SIG budgets
  • Advises, liaises, and directs work groups of professional and support staff in the execution of projects related to SIGs

SIG Program Coordinator

  • Manages the SIG Coordinating Committee nominations and elections
  • Maintains SIG committee data, including subcommittees
  • Provides technical support for SIG-related queries (i.e., online access)
  • Coordinates SIG promotional and administrative/logistical support for ASHA events (flyers, giveaways, announcements, etc.)
  • Maintains and updates online SIG Handbook

SIG Administrative Assistant

  • Provides support for SIG Coordinating Committee (CC) meetings (requests for space, travel, materials, etc.)
  • Coordinates SIG email blasts
  • Runs membership statistic reports
  • Arranges conference calls (for calls involving more than the CC)

Perspectives Editorial Staff

  • Edit Perspectives content for grammar, clarity, and adherence to APA style
  • Format and otherwise prepare and submit content to the publishing vendor (e.g., HighWire Press or other as appropriate)
  • Coordinate the internal review of Perspectives by the respective SIG ex officios, who determine whether content adheres to ASHA policies, specifically with respect to sensitive matters such as scope of practice, ethics, and evidence-based practice 
  • Work with SIG Editors and CE Content Managers to resolve editorial issues related to Perspectives content
  • Submit Perspectives CE materials to ASHA Professional Development
  • Maintain and update online content for Perspectives on ASHA, HighWire (or other publishing vendor), and ScholarOne
  • Present to SIG Coordinating Committees in yearly face-to-face meetings
