SIG Position Descriptions

SIG Ex Officios

These positions work within the National Office (NO) unit that most closely aligns with the topic of their designated SIG(s) (ex. Clinical Issues, International Programs, Audiology) to help infuse and integrate the work of the SIGs into the work of the Assocation; responsibilities include

  • Facilitate the work of the SIG to ensure adherence to Association policies and procedures
  • Ensure the SIG satisfies minima expectations of operation
  • Ensure SIG input to ASHA activities and programs
  • Serve as first point of contact for Coordinating Committee (CC) requests (e-mail blasts, online chats, etc.)
  • Serve as a staff resource on the SIG affiliate online community
  • Review Perspectives content
  • Identify, in collaboration with the Coordinating Committee, dates and agenda items for CC meetings and conference calls
  • Develop the SIG budget with the SIG Director

SIG Director

This position reports to the Chief Staff Officer for Speech-Language Pathology; responsibilities include

  • Serve as ex officio to the Board of Special Interest Group Coordinators (BSIGC)
  • Orient Coordinators and new Coordinating Committee members
  • Oversee the operations of the SIG Program
    • facilitate/monitor initiatives/activities of SIG Coordinating Committees and subcommittees to ensure conformity to Association policies and procedures
    • supervise the production of SIG publications and development and maintenance of online content, and oversees (prepares and maintains) SIG budgets
    • oversees (prepares and maintains) SIG budgets
  • Advise, liaise, and direct work groups of professional and support staff in the execution of projects related to SIGs

SIG Program Coordinator

This position reports to the SIG Director, responsibilities include

  • Manage the SIG Coordinating Committee nominations and elections
  • Maintain SIG committee data, including subcommittees
  • Provide technical support for SIG-related queries (i.e., online access)
  • Coordinate SIG promotional and administrative/logistical support for ASHA events (flyers, giveaways, announcements, etc.)
  • Maintain and update online SIG Handbook

SIG Administrative Assistant

This position reports to the SIG Director, responsibilities include

  • Provide support for SIG Coordinating Committee (CC) meetings (requests for space, travel, materials, etc.)
  • Coordinate SIG e-mail blasts
  • Run membership statistic reports
  • Arrange conference calls (for calls involving more than the CC)

Perspectives Production Editors

These positions report to the Director of Publications, responsibilities include

  • Edit Perspectives content for grammar, clarity, and adherence to APA style
  • Format and otherwise prepare and submit content to the publishing vendor (e.g., SilverChair or other as appropriate)
  • Coordinate the internal review of Perspectives by the respective SIG ex officios, who determine whether content adheres to ASHA policies, specifically with respect to sensitive matters such as scope of practice, ethics, and evidence-based practice
  • Work with SIG Editors, Professional Development Managers, and CE Content Managers to resolve editorial issues related to Perspectives content
  • Submit Perspectives CE materials to ASHA Professional Development
  • Maintain and update online content for Perspectives on ASHA, SilverChair (or other publishing vendor), and ScholarOne
  • Present to SIG Coordinating Committees in yearly face-to-face meetings

Online Collaboration Manager

This position reports to the Director of Online Communications; responsibilities include

  • Manage ASHA's SharePoint-based collaboration sites (collaborate.asha.org)
  • Work with staff site administrators to assist them with site setup and training for users
  • Develop and maintain basic training materials that can be used by all collaboration site users
  • Facilitate online collaboration for volunteers and SIG affiliates (community.asha.org)
  • Facilitate live online events
  • Manage and facilitate ASHA's use of web conferencing (e.g. GoToMeeting, Skype, etc.)
