Grant Review and Reviewer Training
Grant Review and Reviewer Training has two aims: 1) to provide specific instruction on how to effectively review research grants, with a special emphasis on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) review process; and 2) to conduct reviews of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHFoundation) research grant applications. Training covers key components of the review process, how to address review challenges, and how to prepare written summaries of review panel discussions.
The workshop is co-sponsored by ASHA and ASHFoundation. It is planned and coordinated by the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee and ASHA's Academic Affairs and Research Education Unit.
Researchers who have secured at least R03-level (or equivalent) federal research funding as the principal investigator (PI) or co-PI may be invited to serve as reviewers. A number of scientists with long-standing records of research funding and review experience are specifically included to enrich the training environment with their expertise.

Grant Review and Reviewer Training consists initially of lectures and model review sessions that illustrate the NIH grant review scoring system and process, and the role of the reviewer. All reviewers then participate in the review panels of ASHFoundation research grant applications. Reviewers who have served as standing members of federal review panels demonstrate and explain best practices for review throughout the program. Review processes at other funding agencies are contrasted with the NIH process.
How to Attend
Attendance is by invitation only, and is limited to approximately 30 reviewers.
The workshop is scheduled for August 6–8, 2013, at the ASHA National Office in Rockville, Maryland.
There is no registration fee. Funds are provided for participant travel, hotel and meals (up to an allowance).
