On April 19, 2010, President Obama nominated Donald Berwick, MD, as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Dr. Berwick is a pediatrician and professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He is also the CEO and president of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, a nonprofit organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that works to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care. CMS has not had a permanent administrator since Mark McClellan left in October 2006. The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
