Identity Theft Prevention Delayed Until January 1, 2011

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has  again pushed back the implementation date for the "Red Flag" rules from June 1, 2010 to January 1, 2011. The FTC requires health care providers to implement a policy to prevent identity theft. Private practice audiologists and speech-language pathologists who do not require patients to pay for their services in full at the time of service are required to implement a program to prevent identity theft by January 1, 2011. ASHA's article about complying with the FTC's "red flag" rules can be found on the Web site. For further information, contact Kate Romanow, ASHA's director of health care regulatory advocacy, at kromanow@asha.org or 800-498-2071, ext. 5671.
