ED Awards $19.9 Million for Special Education Personnel Preparation Grants

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S. Department of Education (ED), has awarded $19.9 million in grants to train special educators to improve services for children with disabilities. Of that amount, $13.5 million (under the Personnel Development to Improve Services and Results for Children with Disabilities/Combined Priority program) will be targeted at improving the quality and increasing the number of people who are fully credentialed to serve children with disabilities. The funds, among other things, will help current and future special education professionals complete degrees, state certification, professional licenses or state endorsement in early intervention, special education, or a related services field.

More than $6 million will be devoted to Personnel Development to Improve Services and Results for Children with Disabilities/Preparation of Leadership Personnel grants.

For more information, including a list of grant recipients, visit ED's Web site or contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's director of education and regulatory advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 5611.
